Costa
Brava
|
 |
| As
well as its internationally renowned coastline and beautiful
pine-clad hills, the Costa Brava has a great deal to offer the
most active of visitors with numerous championship golf courses,
sailing, horse riding, cycle hire, tennis, swimming and snorkelling.
A short drive to Girona with its historic old quarter, Figueres
with the Dali museum and La Bisbal, the ceramics centre and,
of course, Barcelona are within easy reach for a day trip. Alternatively,
if you like to simply unwind in peaceful surroundings with no
more exercise than a trip to a local restaurant offering excellent
food then you will not be disappointed.
The
area is well served by air with regular flights to Barcelona
with many of the new "no frills" carriers as well
as flights to Gerona, Perpignon and Montpelier . There are
also motorail connections to Narbonne and many visitors enjoy
driving down from one of the French ports as part of their
holiday.

Roses
is situated approx 30 kms from the French border, 160 kms from
Barcelona and 65 kms from Gerona. A wonderful family holiday
location with plenty of activities on offer. There are many
pretty coves with an impressive backdrop of cliffs. The beaches
close to the town are ideal for watersports with pedalos and
kayake rental, windsurfing and diving schools and all modern
amenities. For the more active there is a wonderful water park,
go karting and mini golf. The Dali museum at Figueres is a great
attraction and from here one can take a train into either Gerona
or Barcelona. Roses port is one of the most important fishing
ports in Catalonia which means that the fish restaurants are
both plentiful and of a high standard. Both geographically and
historically this is a fascinating area with much to offer all
year round.

L'Estartit
|
 |
|
L'Estartit
is considered to be one of the jewels of the Mediterranean
for diving. In a recent Sunday Times feature the Medes Islands,
which are just a mile off the coast at L'Estartit, were described
as one of the premier diving areas in Europe. L'Estartit has
grown from a small fishing village to a modern resort but
managed to retain the charm which originally made it so popular.
In the back streets of the old village you can wander away
from the hustle and bustle of the main resort which offers
something for all age groups. Once again, the beach and water
sports are of significant importance to this resort and the
miles of sand give visitors every opportunity for this.

Platja
de Pals is an ideal family holiday destination with the emphasis
on beach activity on the golden sands that stretch for miles.
There are many restaurants around the beach together with cycle
hire, tennis courts, crazy golf and an excellent supermarket.
The town of Pals is approximately 3kms inland and is a preserved
medieval village, a delight to wander around at night when the
cobbled streets are floodlit. There are some craft shops and
excellent restaurants located here. From the castle (the tower
dates back to the 9th century) you look over marshland and nature
reserve. The area is renowned for its high quality golfing.
There are three golf courses in Pals (as well as a pitch and
putt course) including the Emporda Golf Course on the road to
Torroella de Montgri where professional competitions are often
hosted.

Begur
|
 |
|
The
hilltop fortress stands as a landmark above the village square
where most of the activity takes place in the summer months.
If you are fortunate there may be some local musicians playing
and there is often an evening market of local produce and
crafts. Alternatively, the narrow streets leading from the
square are home to some unique shops and tapas bars.
Sa
Riera is the closest beach to Begur down a winding road where
the breathtaking view of the Bay meets you as you start your
descent. On the edge of the beach there are a couple of restaurants
(closed in winter) and in the high season there is a small
supermarket.

Santa
Cristina d'Aro/Playa d'Aro
|
This
area is mainly residential. The villas are set in large plots
with a backdrop of green hills. It is a particularly attractive
area for walkers. The 18 hole Costa Brava Golf Club is situated
here and PGA Colf de Catalunya at Caldes de Malavella just a
few kms away. Santa Cristina has some excellent restaurants
and shops and an ideal location if you wish to be away from
the crowds in the summer months but still within a ten minute
drive to the beaches. The nearest beaches are San Feliu de Guixols,
S'Agaro and Platja d'Aro. They are all quite different but between
them they satisfy every visitor's needs from beautiful stretches
of sand, endless water sports, restaurants, fashion shops and
lively bars and discos. This area is most diverse and very popular
with the Spanish. In the summer months there are regular exhibitions,
markets (including the Mediterranean sea market) , international
music festivals, Jazz nights and guided tours.
